The Shrine is a welcoming place for people of all faiths, and remains a focal point for the the continuing mission of Mother Cabrini, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the many lay contributors who help keep the mission alive around the world.
An Invitation from Sister Joan McGlinchey and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Thank you for your interest in the National Shrine of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini in Chicago. Mother Cabrini, as she is so affectionately called by many, was a shining example of putting one’s Love of God in Action.
Her relationship with God gave her the strength and inspiration to “Welcome” the multitudes in dire need that she and her Missionary Sisters served so generously in hospitals, orphanages, schools and shelters. From Italy to the United States, from Brazil to Nicaragua and beyond, Mother Cabrini was a bridge between God and the most vulnerable; the affluent and the poor, the newly arrived immigrant and the well-established citizen.
So with Mother Cabrini as their guide, our Missionary Sisters and our devoted laity are reopening the National Shrine in Chicago which was closed ten years ago. Our Vision is to rekindle awareness of Mother’s life and mission and establish the National Shrine as a dynamic spiritual center in Chicago by:
• Becoming a vibrant Eucharistic presence offering quality Liturgy in Word and Sacrament to the faithful and fostering Eucharistic devotion in all its rich forms.
• Sharing Mother Cabrini’s story in creative new ways so her powerful message and example of Love of God in Action will impact lives today!
• Hosting thousands of children from our Catholic schools and youth of all ages from our city’s culturally diverse neighborhoods so young people have an opportunity to encounter a real saint who lived in Chicago and who can still inspire their own personal call to holiness and mission.
• Offering a warm welcome and vital programs that meet the needs of the modern day pilgrim, the spiritually hungry, the stranger, the marginalized, the immigrant; those who know God and those who still seek to find God in their lives.
We invite you to express your Love of God in Action and help us realize the promise of our vision for the Shrine. First, we ask that you pray for the success of our Shrine mission and ministry.
